5 and 5: Badass Style
I do believe that every time I have ever asked for a guest post, my friend Badass Geek (aka BAG in some circles) has willingly obliged. And so let’s start out the week with his thoughts. Classic Baddass, if you ask me….

Moonspun is away on vacation, and while I’m trying not to be overly jealous, I’m glad she’s getting a chance to get away and see some family. As I’m sure you’ve figured out, she asked us to write a list of 5 things we love and hate about any given holiday. She mentioned specifically Thanksgiving, and that suits me just fine.
Five Things I Love About Thanksgiving:
- The Family – With all the various spouses, and a new niece and nephew added in, very rarely do we get a chance to have the whole family together all at once. My parents house gets a little crowded, but that’s fine with me. It’s nice to be able to see everyone and get caught up on their lives.
- The Food – Obviously, the food is amazing. I was going to put it as the first one on the list, but I figured it’d be a little rude if I said I loved the food more than my family. But yes, the food. There is so much to choose from, plenty to go around, and there is always enough for seconds. And thirds. And then leftovers the next couple of days.
- The Macy’s Parade – It’s been a longstanding tradition in my family, as I’m sure it is in some of yours, to watch the Macy’s Day parade. It’s not the same now as I remembered it to be as a kid, but nostalgia always wins me over.
- The Football Game – Thanksgiving is synonymous with football in some households. No matter what house Thanksgiving is hosted at in my family, there is always a TV with the game on. It’s a great way for the ladies (who don’t enjoy the game, that is) to talk and gossip while the guys yell at the referee’s on the tube.
- The Weather – I can’t remember a Thanksgiving in recent memory where the weather hasn’t felt perfect. The brisk, cool air with a little bite to it, the smell of a woodstove burning somewhere in the neighborhood, the leaves on the ground… it is perfection.
Five Things I Tend To Dislike Sometimes About Thanksgiving:
- The Family – As much as I love my family and enjoy seeing them, they are my sisters after all. They know how to push my buttons, just like I know how to push theirs. With a crowded house and hormonal imbalances (hey, it happens), and some of us who still have the inability to take a joke, there is bound to be some minor spats.
- The Food – I always, always, ALWAYS eat too much. It’s not that I set out each year to not overeat, it’s just that I can’t help myself. The food is healthy enough, so if there is one day a year where I have to pull out my Eating Pants to make sure I don’t pop a button or blow out a zipper, so be it.
- The Macy’s Parade – It’s so overdone and commercialized now. Not that any other major holiday these days isn’t, but I almost can’t stand to watch it now. There is a minute of parade footage squeezed in the seven minutes of commercials, and the hosts… well, don’t get me started on my thoughts of the hosts.
- The Football – There’s always a game on, and it’s impossible to socialize with family and eat the glorious food if you’re interested (and may have money riding on) the game. One of these days I’ll convince my mother to let my dad and I move a TV into the dining room.
- The Weather – Well, it’s not so much the weather more than it is Daylight Saving Time and how it gets dark so early this time of year. It makes the traveling that we do a little more difficult, but I suppose in the end, it’s worth it.
Hope you have a great time with your family, Moonspun.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Oh Thanksgiving. And I’m all about the macy’s day parade (and the boscov’s parade, and the other such parades that play – I’m a channel flipper). Love the parades. I agree that they’ve become completely commercialized, but…I enjoy watching them anyways. I blame my mother for this – every Thanksgiving when I was young she’d plunk me and my sister down in front of the television and make us watch the parade (I have the suspicion that she did this to get us away from her). So, it’s kind of a tradition.
Happy Thanksgiving ya’ll!

Turns out Thanksgiving isn’t at my parents this year, but at my uncle’s house. Which means even more family to be pleased to see/annoyed with.
Awesome.

I’ve become a cynic in regards to Turkey day as I have spent the last 12 of them with my husband’s family consuming “catered” bird! (That is a sin in my eyes!) For the last 4 years, the bird was unseasoned because 1 person (grandpa) out of 50 couldn’t have sodium.
This year, since I’m currently living and working with my inlaws I declared “enough is enough” and we are going to my Aunt’s house for Thanksgiving. Where we will dine on “catered” bird.
***sigh***
Happy Freaking Thanksgiving!

I also have such mixed feelings.. about pretty much every family. Sometimes I think if I just changed it up a little one year, the next year I would appreciate it even more…

Thanksgiving is going to be a total of about 35 people, this year. God help me.

Oh boy, does this post hit home. Great job, Badass! We do Thanksgiving with my inlaws every year. The drama is unbelievable. Oh well, at least I don’t have to do all the cooking.

Great post BAG….I tend to agree with just about everything you said. Except the football. Cos that sucks. Maybe not for you?

Great post, as usual, man! I think if I wasn’t the one who does all the work for turkey day that I’d find many more nice things to say about the whole ordeal

I have never, EVER watched the Macy’s parade. Does that make me a freak?

We never watched the Macy’s day parade because we always went to watch a real one, the Price Hill Parade that went through our neighborhood. It’s one of the few things I miss about living in that ghetto.

Good post. There’s a good/bad side to everything!
