Yes, it is often at those times when I am doing what my ex-partner used to do around the house that I least appreciate my singledom. Going solo does have plenty of advantages, like, no infuriating snoring waking you up at night; no petty criticism pulling you down all the time; and the ability to watch whatever TV program you want to. Marriage is a permanent state of compromise and I am pretty sure that is not a healthy way to go through life. How can we express ourselves if we are always thinking of others?
But, things like, putting out the garbage, especially at night, are from a single mom’s perspective a real bummer. After all, this is what men are here for right? Insensitive, big muscled and hopefully not a scaredy cat; they fit the bill perfectly. If I am spending all my waking hours looking after my children and keeping the house clean and orderly, someone else can, at least, take out the God damned garbage. Alas, my man has flown the coop, and so, I am left to do everything.
Rubbish removal is a constant part of living in the consumer age. We have so much packaging polluting the environment that it is a full time job taking the trash out. Everything you buy is wrapped in paper and plastic, food, clothes, every God damned thing! We are living in a time where the outside of everything is more important than the inside. Style over substance, as my dear old dad used to say. Kids want to see themselves on Facebook and every other kind of social media; their lives appear meaningless to them if they cannot see a selfie of it.
Men and women cannot sustain relationships beyond the hormonal, honeymoon, procreation stage; we all are conditioned to believe in romance and diamond rings. Taking out the garbage at night is not one of those things we see on Hollywood romcoms; there is no one applauding you when you take out the trash. Nobody is taking selfies of themselves, as they remove the rubbish from their lives. Posted on Facebook tonight, “just had a rewarding experience as a single mom taking out the trash late at night in the dark alone”. Twittered, “Hey just took the trashcans out to the street. Far out!!!!” Putting out the garbage from a single mom’s perspective, just sucks.
